AviaDev full interview. Ato Girma Wake- a lifetime in African Aviation

Published 14 November 2017

10th October 2017, Kigali, Rwanda.

It was an honour and a privilege as part of the AviaDev programme to interview Ato Girma Wake, former CEO of Ethiopian Airlines and former Chairman of RwandAir.

Ato Girma has been a believer in the AviaDev project since day one and has never been one to keep his opinions hidden, hence why he has achieved so much. In recognition of his incredible work steering Ethiopian into the position it is today, it was only right that he was the first recipient of the AviaDev lifetime achievement award, which going forward will be known as the Girma Wake Lifetime Achievement Award and be presented annually to a recipient voted for by our advisory board.

Highlights include:

How he became an aviator
His thoughts on RwandAir's future
About his meeting with Richard Branson ahead of the launch of Virgin Nigeria progressed when Girma informed him that he had not done his homework on the market.
Will Ethiopian develop a monopoly in Africa and is that good for Africa?
What the African aviation market will look like in 10 years
His thoughts on the Yamoussoukro Decision and its implementation.
The most important lesson he has learned during his working life
